The 71st UEFA Champions League reached its conclusion on 30 May 2026 at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, where Paris Saint-Germain defeated Arsenal on penalties to retain Europe’s most prestigious club trophy. PSG’s second title made them the first club to defend the trophy successfully since Real Madrid completed their 2016 to 2018 run of consecutive championships, and the victory arrived in only the second season of the league phase format that has already reshaped the competition. Across 189 matches, 36 clubs and 16 countries, the campaign produced 655 goals, four first-time league phase participants and one unforgettable evening under the lights in the Hungarian capital.
PSG Retain the Trophy in Budapest
The final was settled over 120 minutes and then from twelve yards. Kai Havertz gave Arsenal the lead in the sixth minute, the fastest goal of the evening, and Ousmane Dembélé answered from the penalty spot in the 65th minute to level the score at 1-1. Neither side could find a winner in extra time, and the tie was decided by a shootout that PSG won 4-3 in front of a capacity crowd and a worldwide television audience.
- PSG converted all four of their kicks, through Gonçalo Ramos, Désiré Doué, Achraf Hakimi and Lucas Beraldo.
- Arsenal missed twice: Eberechi Eze failed to convert, and Gabriel Magalhães sent his attempt over the bar on the fifth kick of the shootout.
- Havertz’s sixth-minute strike was Arsenal’s only goal in ninety minutes and extra time.
- Dembélé’s equaliser was the only penalty scored in open play, one of very few across the tournament’s decisive knockout matches.
The result handed PSG a second European Cup in succession and confirmed that the league phase era has already produced a repeat champion, a scenario the old group format had not delivered since 2018. It also completed a campaign in which the French side finished the league phase in 11th place before climbing through every round to the final.
The New League Phase Format
The 2025-26 edition was the 34th competition to be played under the Champions League name and the second to use the single-table league phase. All 36 clubs played eight matches against eight different opponents, four at home and four away, which removed the dead rubbers the old group stage produced and replaced them with a schedule in which every fixture carried direct qualification consequences.
Eighty-two clubs entered through qualifying and the league phase proper, with sixteen national associations represented in the final field. England contributed six teams, Spain five, Italy and Germany four each, France three, and eight associations sent a single representative apiece. The 189 matches produced 655 goals, an average of more than three per game across the entire season.
Final League Phase Standings
The table was frozen on matchday eight, 28 January 2026, and remains the official record. Eight clubs qualified directly for the round of 16, sixteen entered the knockout play-off, and twelve were eliminated at the league phase stage.
- 1. Arsenal — 8-0-0, 23-4, +19, 24 points. The only unbeaten side in the league phase.
- 2. Bayern Munich — 7-0-1, 22-8, +14, 21 points.
- 3. Liverpool — 6-0-2, 20-8, +12, 18 points.
- 4. Tottenham — 5-2-1, 17-7, +10, 17 points.
- 5. Barcelona — 5-1-2, 22-14, +8, 16 points.
- 6. Chelsea — 5-1-2, 17-10, +7, 16 points.
- 7. Sporting CP — 5-1-2, 17-11, +6, 16 points.
- 8. Manchester City — 5-1-2, 15-9, +6, 16 points.
Positions nine to 24, holding 13 points down to 10, entered the play-off, while positions 25 to 36 finished on between nine and one point and went out at the league phase stage. The complete league phase table carries every position and every points total.
Historic Firsts for Bodø/Glimt, Kairat, Union SG and Pafos
Four clubs played their first league phase in the competition, and each arrived from an association with little recent Champions League pedigree. Bodø/Glimt from Norway became the first Norwegian club to reach the knockout phase, and they did it in front of a travelling support that filled every section of their ground. Kairat Almaty covered roughly four thousand kilometres for each of their home fixtures, the longest regular-season journey in the field. Union Saint-Gilloise arrived from Belgium as one of the country’s most consistent domestic performers, and Pafos delivered Cyprus its first appearance in the league phase era.
Top Scorers and Statistical Leaders
Kylian Mbappé finished as the competition’s leading scorer with 15 goals, a total no other player came close to matching across a schedule that demanded eight league phase matches and up to five knockout ties. Ousmane Dembélé finished second on 11, Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres shared third place on 10, and Bukayo Saka and Harry Kane completed the confirmed top six on nine goals each. The full chart is set out on our top scorers page.
How the Knockout Bracket Unfolded
The knockout campaign ran from February to May 2026. The play-off round was contested over two legs on 17/18 and 24/25 February, the round of 16 followed on 10/11 and 17/18 March, the quarter-finals on 7/8 and 14/15 April, and the semi-finals on 28/29 April and 5/6 May. Each round was played home and away until the final.
Arsenal, one of the eight clubs that entered the round of 16 directly, reached Budapest having not lost a league phase match. PSG, arriving from 11th in the league phase, first cleared the play-off and then progressed through the round of 16, the quarter-finals and the semi-finals to reach the final as the competition’s second-placed side.
Viewing and Broadcasting
European match nights are anchored on two kick-off slots, in the early evening and the prime slot, with the schedule published in Central European Time. Rights are sold territory by territory, which means kick-off times and the hosting broadcaster shift from country to country. Away from Europe the competition reaches audiences across Asia, Africa and the Americas, and the single-table league phase tends to reward those markets because eight fixtures across four months give far more scheduling flexibility than the old compressed group stage.
Looking Ahead to 2026-27
The league phase enters its third season, and its two completed editions have already answered most of the questions raised when it was introduced: the bigger field survives the change, the weaker clubs still produce the tournament’s most memorable nights, and the knockout rounds stay intact. PSG enter 2026-27 as holders, Arsenal as the only unbeaten league phase side of 2025-26, and sixteen associations will again look to place a club among the 36. The distribution of venues, the calendar shape and the qualification routes are all expected to be confirmed well before the qualifiers begin.
