A three-time host

When World Cup 2026 begins, Mexico becomes the first country to host the men’s World Cup three times, after 1970 and 1986. On both previous occasions the Estadio Azteca staged the final, and in 2026 it hosts the opening match.

1970 and 1986

The 1970 finals are remembered for Brazil’s brilliant champions and are often regarded as a high point of the sport. In 1986, Mexico stepped in as host at short notice and witnessed Diego Maradona’s legendary quarter-final against England and Argentina’s eventual triumph.

Mexico’s best World Cup runs came on home soil, reaching the quarter-finals in both 1970 and 1986. In 2026, roared on by their own fans once more, El Tri will hope a home tournament can finally carry them past the round of 16 for the first time in 40 years.
